The inside of the base is lined with paper and there is a handwritten panel glued to the inside of the lid that details the history of the box. There is also a paper label glued to the lid with printed and hand-written text: "Presented to the / Historical Society of Delaware, / by / the family of the late / Benjamin Ferris / through / (LP?) Bush 1870." The bottom of the box has two lines of text carved into the surface: "DL 2 mo 6 1737 75 / GL 5 mo 19 1760 80." |

Provenance |
The box came from the family of Benjamin Ferris (1780-1867), who may have also made the relic. The handwritten text on the label inside the lid reads: "This box is made of wood which was part of a chest / imported in the Ship Welcome, Robert Greenway master, by / John Sharpless, late of Ratherton in the County Palatine / of Chester, in England. The chest was landed at Upland / afterwards called Chester, shortly after Penn's arrival on / the 28th of October, then called the Eighth month 1682. From / the foregoing facts is appears that the said chest came to / America in the same ship which first brought Wm. Penn. / The Welcome arrived and anchored opposite New Castle, Oct. 27, 1682: and thence sailed on the / 28th for Upland, where she arrived on the afternoon of the same day. / See Evan Oliver's account / book in Merrit Canby's possession. / Benj. Ferris / June 5th 1852." |
