Description Portrait of John Hedges (1775-1865): Three-quarters bust view of an older man with gray hair and bushy eyebrows who is looking downward and to the right. The subject is wearing a black coat and white cravat. John Hedges was born in Wilmington and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was prominent in civic affairs, especially the Wilmington and Brandywine Waterworks. He was the father of three daughters and two sons.

Provenance The donor was left the portrait by the sitter's grand-daughter, Adaline Hedges McMakin. The sitter was also the great uncle of Elizabeth J. Terheun (the donor's mother).
