Description Cat o' nine tails whip used in the Sussex County penal system with a 20" long, black-painted wooden handle to which is attached a 20 1/2" long strip of leather divided into nine separate strands. The end of the handle has a small ball finial around which a bit of string is still tied.

Provenance This whip belonged to the donor's grandfather, James Alfred Marsh (1879-1946), who was born in Sussex County and worked for the District Attorney's Office until he removed to Colorado in 1909. As part of his duties, he administered flogging punishments to convicted criminals (whipping was a legal punishment in Delaware from 1717-1944).
