Description Oval, framed, black and white engraving of the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834). The engraving depicts a three-quarters bust view of Lafayette in his uniform coat looking slightly left. The engraving is surrounded by an outer border of printed text: "The Marquis de Lafayette Major General in the Armies of the United States of America." In an inner border underneath the image is printed text: "CW Peale pinx't et fecit." The engraving is framed in a black and gold oval frame with beaded molding and has a 3/8" diameter hanging ring at the top. The remains of the backing paper contains an old sticker for Yerger's Art Store, 419 Shipley Street, Wilmington and also hand-written text: "This portrait of Lafayette was presented by / Benjamin Franklin to Gunning Bedford. / Presented to the Historical Society of Delaware by / Henrietta J. Bedford." Another old red and white type-written sticker makes a slightly different claim: "Oct 1865. / Engraving of / Lafayette by / Peale. Given / to G. Bedford / by Lafayette. / Presented by Miss H. Bedford."
