Description Framed, oil on canvas painting of the home of George Read I 1733-1798) in New Castle. This painting is a fanciful recreation by the artist Charles M. Lang (1860-1934), since the property was destroyed by fire in 1824. The painting depicts a Colonial brick house in a landscape with trees. The house has three stories and stands near a body of water. A horse and carriage stands in front of the house and there are three figures walking in the grounds. The frame is elaborately carved and gilded and has a plaque at the center of the lower edge: "Mansion / of / His Excellency George Read / "the Signer" / New Castle, Delaware, 1776 / By Chas. M. Lang".
