Description Unframed marking sampler on linen that is embroidered in black with rows of letters and numbers and signed along the bottom with "Mary Hemphill Bush 1848." The first two rows have a full alphabet in capital letters followed by the numbers 1-9. The third and fourth rows contain a full lower case alphabet and A-K in bold capitals. The fifth row finishes the alphabet in bold capitals. Rows 6-9 contain a script upper case alphabet and another row of letters A-Q.

Mary Hemphill Bush (1840-1865) was born in Wilmington to Dr. Lewis Potter and Maria Jones Bush (daughter of Morgan and Mary Hemphill Jones of Wilmington). Mary Hemphill Bush married Caleb Rodney Layton, Sr. a Sussex County attorney who also served in the Army from 1861-1885 (no children). She is buried in the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery.
