Description Framed, oil on canvas portrait of Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), a Scottish-born, self-taught ornithologist who landed at New Castle, DE, in 1794 before continuing on to Philadelphia. The half-length portrait shows a young man seated in a red chair and writing at a desk. He hold a pen in his right hand that he is putting to paper as he looks up with a dreamy expression. His left hand rests on his cheek. The subject has short brown hair and is wearing a three-piece suit with a black overcoat, tan waistcoat, and white shirt and cravat and is shown against an empty background. This painting appears to be a copy of an original portrait by James Craw that was then engraved by W.H. Lizars and published by Campbell & Co. of Edinburgh in 1831
