Description Silver oval sugar bowl on a stepped oval foot with two impressed horizontal bands flanking the monogram. It has simple strap handles, a band of gadrooning at the rim, and a stepped, domed lid that terminates in an urn finial. Inscribed on the underside of the foot is text: "To S H Brian/ M. Hastings".

Owned Mary Hastings Brian / Sarah Hastings Brian Morris
Provenance The sugar bowl originally belonged to Mary Hastings, daughter of John & Sarah Hastings of Wilmington. She married Wilmington merchant & shipowner James Brian at Wilmington Friends Meeting on April 20, 1809. The item descended to her daughter Sarah Hastings Brian when she married Samuel Morris in 1833. The donor is the great-granddaughter of the original owner.
