The foreground of the painting depicts the central figure of Torbert in a Union uniform mounted upon a prancing white horse. Other Union cavalry soldiers on brown horses are approaching from the left. The right of the composition features indistinct figures representing infantry soldiers in a battle line surrounded by smoke. A broken field gun carriage is visible in the right mid-ground. The sky above the action swirls with smoky grey clouds.
