There is a type-written label on the back with text: "March 1899 Head and bust / (bas relief) of Gen. / Washington, made from / macerated currency. / Mrs. Kate R. Patterson." Beginning in 1874, the U.S. Treasury Department disposed of old, worn out money by shredding it and soaking it to a pulp and then selling the pulp to souvenir companies to make items such as this bust. These souvenirs were popular around the turn of the twentieth century.
