Makers mark The companion silhouette of Ann Brynberg Porter has an original paper framer's label affixed to the back: "Carving and Gilding / Done in the Neatest Manner / by C.N. Robinson, no. 2 Strawberry Ally, Philadelphia."
Description Framed silhouette of Robert Porter, a Wilmington printer, publisher, and bookseller. The 2 1/2" high silhouette depicts a profile bust of a young man facing left that is cut out from paper and mounted over a black silk background. The image is mounted under a piece of reverse-painted glass with a clear octagonal opening that is bordered in gold and then painted black around the edges. Each corner is painted with a decorative (now faded) gold rosette. The back of the frame has hand-written text: "Robert Porter taken 1800 or 1801."

Provenance This silhouette is one of a matching pair made to commemorate the marriage of Robert and Ann Brynberg Porter on August 13, 1801. Robert and Ann Porter were the grandparents of Robert Porter Johnson M.D., a secretary of the Delaware Historical Society and father of the donor, Eleanor Johnson.
