Description Hand-sewn American flag with seven red cotton and six white linen stripes. The blue canton has thirty-four hand-sewn white stars that have been applied around a group of four central stars . There is text in ink written on the reverse (third stripe from the bottom, hoist end): "Rumford 1401 Market St."

Provenance This flag was made by Emily Wollaston (1823-1886) for her half-brother Lieutenant Charles Grubb Rumford (1841-1901), who carried it during his service in the Civil War. Charles G. Rumford was a First Lieutenant in the First Delaware Light Artillery Battery, also known as Nields' Independent Battery, under Captain Benjamin Nields. This unit was organized in Wilmington in 1862 and served until 1865.
