Provenance According to the inscription, this cane passed from Commodore James Biddle of Philadelphia, PA (1783 -1848), to Dr. B. Henry, and then to Commander John P. Gillis of Wilmington, DE (1803 -1873). The occasion for the presentation is unknown. The cane came from the Gillis family and was given by his wife Elizabeth Tatnall Gillis.
