Portrait of John Adam Grohe (1806-1847), a music teacher in Wilmington during the 1840s: Half-length portrait of a young man with slicked down blond hair who is seated in a Bergere chair with red upholstery. The subject is dressed in a black suit and stock and white shirt and waistcoat. He holds a sheet of rolled up music in his right hand. The background contains a harp, a Classical statue playing a wind instrument, and a vague, fanciful landscape scene. An old label on the back reads: "John Adam Grohe / Professor of Music / 1840-1847."
