Description Armless sofa with serpentine front and crest rail; mahogany veneer over pine; seat and back (both sides) are upholstered with a dark peach colored silk brocade fabric (not original according to the donor) with a repeating design of alternating dark red roses and pale blue flowers; the crest has a central carved stylized foliage motif that is repeated (in a more muted form) at the front and center of the wood base. The sofa has casters.

Provenance According to the donor, the sofa was part of a pair and came out of the Ayres Stockly house in Smyrna, DE. The sofa originally belonged to Ayres Stockly (1800-1882), who acquired this sofa in the mid -1800s after his marriage to Margaret Offley (1795-1875). The sofa descended in the Stockly family through Ayres son John, grandson Ayres Jacques, and great-grandson Ayres Holmes Stockly, who donated it to the Society.
