Description Model 1850 presentation sword presented to Captain Alhanan M. Burton (1835-1915) of Company A, Fifth Delaware Regiment. The sword has a steel blade, the upper 18" of which is engraved on both sides with foliage motifs, various martial symbols, "U.S.", and eagle and shield with "E Pluribus Unum." The blade has a thin 22" long fuller along the top edge of the blade, beneath which is a wider 24" long one. The hilt is brass and the guard is cast with openwork floral and foliage motifs. The brass pommel is oval shaped and slightly domed with three tiers and cast foliage decoration just below it. The brown shagreen grip is wrapped with both twisted and straight bands of brass wire wrap. Nothing remains of the scabbard except the brass throat, which is engraved: "Presented to / Capt. Alhanan M. Burton / by Co. A. 5th Regt. Del. Vol. / Dec. 25, 1862."

Provenance The donor was Captain Burton's daughter. Alhanan M. Burton (1835-1915) worked as a carpenter for Jackson & Sharp and lived at 712 East 7th Street in Wilmington. He is interred at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington.
