There are two interior compartments and a top flap closure, beneath which is a cental panel stitched with "JH / 1779" flanked by two pansy flowers.|

The wallet originally belonged to James Hemphill (1774-1833), a merchant and the son of William Hemphill (1743-1823). The donor is related to the Bush family, who were in turn connected to the Hemphill clan.
