Description Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword that belonged to Brigadier General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert (1833-1880). The sword has a steel blade, the upper 18" of which is engraved on both sides with various floral and martial motifs, including weapons clusters, an eagle and shield with "E Pluribus Unum," and crossed flags. The base of the blade is engraved on one side with "Philadelphia." The hilt is brass and the guard is cast with openwork floral motifs. The brown shagreen grip is wrapped in brass wire. The leather scabbard is broken into two pieces and has brass fittings and two brass rings.
