Description Framed, oil on canvas portrait of Anna Maria Alexander McMullen Jones (1787-1863), the second wife of George Jones (1784-1867). The half-length portrait depicts a seated woman with small blue eyes and curled, dark brown hair. The subject is facing front and wearing a gray dress with puffed sleeves and a lacy collar and cap with ribbon ties. She holds a small book (presumably a Bible) in her right hand and is shown in front of a red background drape. The frame has a brass plaque with text: "Anna Maria Jones / Wife of George Jones / Presented to / Wilmington Delaware Historical Society / By his grandson / John A. Underwood." Although this portrait was said to have been painted around the time of the sitter's marriage to George Jones on November 21, 1823, the style of the sitter's clothing is from the 1830s.
