Description Framed chromolithograph of the racing yachts "Volunteer" and "Thistle" at the America's Cup International Yacht Race of 1887. The lithograph depicts the American "Volunteer" and Scottish "Thistle" sailing in the foreground with a variety of paddle steamers and another yacht in the background. The signature of the artist for the original painting is visible in the lower left corner: "Fred S. Cozzens / 87." There is printed script text at the center underneath the image: "From the original painting by Fred S. Cozzens in the possession of C.L. Jones and Co. Reproduced in facsimile by Armstrong & Co. Lith. Boston and Riverside Press Cambridge." The title text also appears under the image: "International Yacht Race 1887 / Volunteer and Thistle, Just after the start, first day." "Volunteer" was designed by Edward Burgess and was the 223rd vessel built by the Pusey & Jones shipyard in Wilmington.

Provenance The donor was a collector of Wilmington marine art and his interest stemmed from his own family connections with Harlan & Hollingsworth (seven members of his family worked there).
