1939.008 - Sword, Presentation

Model 1850 presentation Foot Officer's sword and scabbard presented to Captain Joseph M. Barr. The sword has a steel blade that is etched on both sides with scrolling foliage motifs, martial symbols and text: "U.S." and "E Pluribus Unum." One side of the blade is etched with the maker's name: "W.H. Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia." The top of the blade is also etched with "Iron Proof." The gray shagreen grip is wrapped with brass wire and the guard is bronze with foliage motifs. Just below the pommel is a cast design of oak leaves and acorns. The scabbard is gray shagreen with a 6 1/2" long copper drag and copper fittings and rings. The upper fitting is engraved on one side: "Presented

Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry saber with an unmarked steel blade. It has a steel basket guard and unadorned steel pommel. The grip has only bare wood with only a few very tiny traces of leather left. The steel scabbard is sturdy and undecorated with two heavy steel rings.

Female doll with a stuffed cloth body and papier-mâché head with molded black hair and black glass eyes. The arms once had kid leather lower parts with defined fingers, but only part of one of these remains. The only outfit on the doll is a petticoat, white knitted stockings, and black shoes.

Miniature Victorian sideboard for the McComb dollhouse. The sideboard has a white marble top and a lower cupboard with two doors. The upper portion has a scrolling back with two shelves supported by turned bone spindles. The entire body of the sideboard is painted to resemble japanned furniture is decorated with gold scrolling and geometric patterns. The back has two oval mirrors, each painted with a country cottage scene.

Miniature chest of drawers for the McComb dollhouse. The squat, rectangular chest has a white marble top and four drawers with flattened silver flower pulls. Each drawer front is accented with gold paint at the edges. The drawers are flanked by turned column supports on bun feet at the front (the rear legs are blocks).

Miniature Victorian sofa for the McComb dollhouse. The sofa has a heavy, Rococo revival style frame with gilded accents and pale blue silk upholstery. There is a bolster cushion at each end and the upholstery is trimmed in white.

Needlework mourning picture that is both painted and worked in silk chenille yarn on a silk ground. The scene depicts two ladies beside a centrally placed funerary monument that is crowned with an urn. There is no name visible on the monument's oval cartouche. A lady wearing a black mantilla on the right places a pink rose on the monument while a lady in a white cap on the left contemplates the monument with a downcast face. The monument appears in a landscape and has a tree directly behind it.

U.S. Navy Officer's full dress uniform coat that belonged to Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865). Double-breasted black wool coat with swallowtails and two rows of brass buttons down the front that have an eagle and anchor motif (one missing). It is lined with white finely quilted cotton twill lining in the top part and white silk in the tails, which are also stuffed with wool batting. The high, stiff collar is trimmed with gold metallic ribbon. Each sleeve has four brass buttons that match the buttons on the front of the coat. There are also brass bars at each shoulder for attaching epaulets (not present). The collar secures with a single large, sturdy hook and eye closure.

U.S. Navy Officer's service coat that belonged to Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865). Double-breasted black wool frock coat with two rows of brass buttons down the front that have an eagle and anchor motif. It is lined with black polished cotton. The coat has a turned down collar with brass bars at each shoulder to attach epaulets (not present). Each sleeve is trimmed with three horizontal bands of gold metallic trim and four brass buttons that match those on the front of the coat (all present both sides).

Hand & machine stitched man's white silk moiré waistcoat with a single back buckle. It has five silk-covered buttons at the front with hand-stitched button holes and three pockets (two on the left, one on the right) at the front. The maker's stamp is stamped in black on the lining of the back and the buckle has a patent date stamp of 1854-55.
