Hand-stitched, wool American Stars and Stripes flag with seven red and six white individually stitched stripes. The 25 1/4" x 18 1/4" navy blue wool canton has been pieced into the body of the flag and contains thirteen 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" cotton stars that have been individually hand sewn into it. The fly end has a finished seam but the top and bottom edges are unfinished. The flag is hand-sewn onto a 2" wide burlap hoist with two brass eyelets. There is hand-written text on each side of the hoist. On one side: "C.R. Jefferis" and on the reverse: "Ensign 3 x 5."

1844 U.S. presidential campaign flag of Henry Clay (1777-1852): The blue canton has a printed medallion portrait of Henry Clay surrounded by a laurel wreath and circle of stars with additional stars at each corner of the canton. The red and white striped field has blue printed text: "Clay / Frelinghuysen / Markle / and / Protective Tariff." This flag advocated the Whig candidacy of Henry Clay for President and Theodore Frelinghuysen for Vice President. They lost this campaign to Democrat, James K. Polk. Joseph Markle, the Whig candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, was defeated by Democrat, Francis R. Shunk. The Whig Party was generally in favor of Protectionism and the Tariff of 1842, which

Hand-stitched, Confederate flag with a navy blue canton that contains a circle of seven white stars. The field consists of two broad horizontal red stripes that flank a single central white stripe. There is hand-written text on the canvas near the hoist: "Rebel Flag / Captured in South Carolina / by the fleet under command / of Com. S.F. Du Pont U.S.N. / 1862." Also "Presented to the City / March 6, 1862." There is also hand-written text on the flag itself: "City Wilmington" and "Wilmington Del."

Hand-stitched man's black top hat with a black silk ribbon around the base of the crown on the outside. It has a brown leather sweatband and is lined in white silk moiré with a black maker's stamp on the inside of the crown: "Superior quality / Saltzgiver & Bupp / Wilmington, Del." The gold initials "D.F." have been pasted on underneath the maker's stamp.

The outer edge and fringe end are trimmed with a 5/8" wide band of gold metallic edging. The loose ends are also trimmed with a 2 1/2" long gold metallic fringe. The inner edge of the sash has been trimmed on both sides with a 3/4" wide band of reddish brown velvet that is edged with a 3/16th" wide band of gold metallic edging. The outer edge and fringe end are trimmed with a 1/2" wide band of gold metallic edging that also cuts across the sash at the level of the lowest rosette. Framed, oil on board marine landscape by Alexander Charles Stuart (1831-1898). The painting depicts a schooner being towed away from the viewer by a steamer. The sky is overcast and the sea is dark and choppy. There is a rocky coastline with a lighthouse visible in the background. A framer's label for F.W. Devoe & Co., corner of Fulton and Williams Streets, New York is visible on the back, as is had-written text in green crayon: "Show to Mr. Carey of Farmer's Bank."

Rectangular, black-laquered, children's school pencil box with a hinged lid and three interior compartments (one long and two shorter) and a small steel lock and escutcheon at the front. The outside of the lid is painted with a fanciful Chinese scene of acrobats and musicians being watched by a man and woman with a parrot on the left. Someone has carved "C.D.T. 11/1/94" deeply and messily into the base.

Elaborately embroidered genealogical project sampler on a very fine linen square. It has an elaborate 2" wide floral border, four four-line moral poems, and extensive genealogical information about the maker ("Elizabeth Evans was born / October 2nd 1811 / and done this work in the / year 1824.") Her parents' information is recorded as "William Evans was born October 20th 1776 / Lydia Evans was born / January 31st 1785." The sampler also records the names of the maker's sisters (Phebe, Sarah, Susanna, Lydia) and her brothers (Thomas, William, Jonathan, John, George), as well as her grandparents (Jonathan & Sarah Evans ; William, Phebe, & Sarah Hoopes). Her teacher's name, Mary Ann Cheyney, is

Framed, girl's boarding school project sampler on very fine linen that consists of two four-line embroidered verses that are encircled by a very simple vine and leaf border with a stylized bow motif at the top. The verses are entitled "Extract" and the text reads: "Yield to the Lord with simple heart / All that thou hast, and all thou art, / Renounce all strength, but strength divine, / And peace forever shall be thine. / Silence and thought the mind improve, They kindle joy in pious hearts; / On them desends [sic] the mystic dove, / And every Christian grace imparts."
