1865.001 - Ribbon

Family heirloom piece of silver metallic ribbon from the uniform of Colonel John Haslet (circa 1727-1777), a veteran of the French and Indian War and the first Colonel of the First Delaware Regiment during the American Revolution. He was killed in action at the Battle of Princeton. The ribbon has a linen base woven onto which are silver metallic threads in a pattern of diagonal stripes.

Oval, framed, black and white engraving of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). The engraving depicts a three-quarters bust portrait of Franklin looking right. The engraving is surrounded by an outer border of printed text: "His Excellency B. Franklin L.L.D. F.R.S. President of Pennsylvania, and Late Minister of the United States of America at the Court of France." In an inner border beneath the image is printed text: "CW Peale pinx't et fecit 1787." Oval, framed, black and white engraving of the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834). The engraving depicts a three-quarters bust view of Lafayette in his uniform coat looking slightly left. The engraving is surrounded by an outer border of printed text: "The Marquis de Lafayette Major General in the Armies of the United States of America." In an inner border underneath the image is printed text: "CW Peale pinx't et fecit." Colichemarde sword that originally belonged to Captain William Robeson (1743-1815) of Newport, DE. The sword has a steel blade that is thicker at the hilt end and then tapers sharply toward the tip. The upper 7" of the blade are engraved on both sides with arabesque designs. The hilt is silver with a small guard that consists of two 2 3/8" wide silver ovals, both of which are engraved. One is engraved with "Liberty & Property" and the other with "WR Sep. 1 1775." The silver knuckle guard is delicate with a twisted center and is stamped with "JS" in a small rectangle at the base of the decorative twist on one side. 1895.002 - Ladle, Punch

Silver punch ladle with a deep circular bowl and slightly flared upper rim. It is etched and embossed with stylized floral motifs and has a straight wooden handle with four graduated, turned bulbous forms at the far end. There is a Norwegian-minted coin from 1717 set into the floor of the bowl. The inscription reads: "Fridi--Rex Dan Nor V G". The inscription on the underside of the bowl reads: "XVI Skillin-/ Danske/ 1717 HCM" (for Henning Christofer Meyer, mint master at Kongsberg).

Framed needlework picture with the maker's inscription: "Elizabeth M. Richards Her work in her / 7th year." The piece has a 1 1/2" wide undulating stylized floral border that surrounds a central picture of a house with two trees, in front of which is a filed with five sheep and five figures (two male and three female) of different sizes.

Needlework wallet with a pattern that consists of repeating small diamonds worked in Bargello stitches. The wallet has four interior compartments and there is a very worn, illegible name embroidered on one of the inside edges.

Hand-sewn, needlework wallet worked in bargello with a colorful pattern of overlapping diamonds in red, yellow, green, blue, and brown. It has blue twill tape edging. The wallet folds in half and there are four interior compartments. One of the inside edges is embroidered in red with "John Comegys His Book / Made in the year / 1774."

Rococo-style, pear-shaped silver teapot with a fruitwood handle, molded circular foot, C-shaped handle, and hinged domed lid with a bell finial. The spout has leaf and swirl decorations. It is engraved with "B" in script on the side.

Hand-sewn, full-length light brown linen dress with elbow length sleeves and a front closure that consists of two drawstrings at the neck and waist. The skirt is unlined and the bodice is lined with linen. It has a round neck and a pocket slit at each hip. There is also a single intact growth pleat at the hem.

Hand-stitched, colorful needlework purse with a green silk lining. The outside is worked with a yellow diamond grid pattern that has embroidered strawberry motifs at the center of each square. The top band along the inside is worked in cross stitch with "S.Ware 1799." There are two interior compartments.

Lady's folding fan with pierced ivory sticks and guards, a brass rivet, and mother of pearl washer. The paper leaf has a printed and hand-painted eighteenth-century Classical revival genre scene with gold accents that depicts ladies and three Roman soldiers on one side, and a small central painted Chinese scene with a figure in a landscape on the reverse. There are two notes hand-written in pencil on the back of the leaf at each guard: "Aunt McKinly's fan - given to sister Jane" and "Aunt McKinly - given to sister Jane / by Aunt A. Richardson." Porcelain teapot in the "English Rose" pattern with a spare, Neoclassical silhouette and straight spout. The handle consists of two twined porcelain strands with orange-painted floral decoration at the base where they meet the body. The teapot has a white ground on which is a painted a small pink floral sprig design at the center of the body on each side. Three thin orange bands encircle the teapot at the top and these are overlaid with four painted floral sprig designs at regularly spaced intervals. The decoration on the lid repeats this pattern and terminates in a large strawberry finial.

It has a white ground on which is a painted a small pink floral sprig design at the center of the body on each side. The lip has remains of gilding and the inside is decorated at the lip with two thin orange bands overlaid with three painted floral sprig designs at regularly spaced intervals.

Early Federal-style armchair made from American ash and tulip poplar with a square back that has an open lyre motif splat, stepped crest rail, and two finials. The chair has a square seat frame with a bowed front and straight, round, reeded legs that terminate in spade feet. The arms are gently curved and reeded with scrolled knuckles. The corners of the frame have applied acanthus leaf decorative moldings. The arm pads and seat have been reupholstered in a peach silk brocade fabric. The chair is currently painted white and gilded but this is a nineteenth-century addition (according to paint analysis, the original paint color was a shade of blue-green or grey-green).
